Best Slip Leads UK: Rope Slip Leads for Dogs Compared

A slip lead is a single length of rope with a ring at one end, so the loop goes over your dog’s head and works as a collar and lead in one. The Jack Pyke Traditional Dog Slip Lead Olive is a classic gundog choice, while stopper leads such as the Fenrir keep the loop from closing too far.

How we chose: every lead here is a slip lead sold for dogs and showed as in stock on its UK product page on 8 October 2026. Lengths and materials come from the listings. We have not tested each lead, and a qualified trainer can show you how to use one well.

What Is a Slip Lead For?

Slip leads are quick to put on and take off, which is why vets, groomers, kennels and rescue centres use them to move dogs safely. Gundog handlers like them because there is nothing on the dog to catch in cover once the lead is off. They are also handy as a spare in the car, or for a dog that has slipped out of its collar. For everyday walking, most owners still prefer a flat collar or a harness with a separate lead, and our guide to dog leads covers those.

A slip lead does not replace your dog’s collar and tag. Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, a dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address on it, as gov.uk explains.

How Do You Put a Slip Lead On Correctly?

Make a loop by passing the rope through the ring, so that the loop loosens on its own when you stop pulling. With your dog on your left, the rope should run from the ring over the top of the neck, not underneath it. Slip the loop over the head and slide it up so it sits high on the neck, just behind the ears and under the jaw. If the loop is on the wrong way round, it will stay tight after a tug, which is uncomfortable and unsafe.

Keep the lead loose most of the time. A slip lead tightens when the dog pulls or you pull, so use short, gentle signals and release straight away. It is not a tool for a dog that drags on the lead all walk.

Are Stoppers Worth Having?

Yes, for most owners. A stopper is a leather tab, rubber bung or spring clip that slides down the rope and limits how far the loop can close. Set it so the loop fits snugly over the head with a little room, then slide it into place. The loop can then tighten enough that the dog cannot back out, but not so far that it chokes. Field Trial and Fenrir leads use spring loaded stoppers that hold their position well.

Which Dogs Should Not Use a Slip Lead?

Avoid slip leads for dogs that pull hard, for short nosed breeds such as pugs and French bulldogs, and for dogs with a collapsing trachea, neck or back problems, or eye conditions where pressure on the neck is a risk. Puppies and nervous dogs also tend to do better on a harness. For a dog that pulls, a well fitted harness from our no pull dog harnesses guide, together with reward based training, is kinder and more effective. Never tie a dog up on a slip lead or leave one on an unattended dog, as the loop can tighten if they get caught.

Rope, Nylon or Cotton?

A braided nylon rope slip lead is strong, light and dries quickly, which suits wet walks and gundog work. Thicker rope, around 12 mm, is easier to grip and spreads the pressure on the neck. Cotton rope feels softer in the hand but holds water and takes longer to dry. Leather slip leads look smart and soften with age but need oiling. Whatever you choose, check the stitching and the ring every few weeks and replace a lead with frayed rope.

What Length Do You Need?

A lead of around 1.2 to 1.5 m keeps a dog close at heel and suits towns and busy paths. Longer leads of 1.8 m give more slack for training and for larger dogs. Very short leads are mainly for moving dogs between a car and a kennel. If you train with treats, a treat bag on your belt keeps both hands free for the lead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Slip Leads Cruel?

Not when used gently and fitted correctly with a stopper. They can hurt if a dog pulls constantly, so choose a harness for strong pullers.

Can a Puppy Use a Slip Lead?

Briefly, for example at the vet. For daily walks and early training, a soft collar or harness is a better start.

Is a Show Lead the Same as a Slip Lead?

Show leads are thinner slip leads made to keep the dog’s outline neat in the ring. Everyday slip leads are thicker and tougher.

Do I Still Need a Collar?

Yes. UK law requires a collar with an ID tag in public, so keep your dog’s collar on under the slip lead.
