Best Dog Whistles UK: ACME and Recall Training Whistles

A dog whistle gives a clear, consistent recall signal that carries further than your voice and sounds the same whoever blows it. The ACME 210.5 Classic Dog Whistle Black is our overall pick, and the Alpha versions suit owners who want an easier grip.

How we chose: every whistle here is sold for training dogs and was in stock on its UK product page on 8 October 2026. Pitch numbers and materials come from the listings. We do not cover whistles sold to stop barking, because a whistle is a training cue, not a correction.

Why Use a Dog Whistle for Recall?

Your voice changes with mood, wind and distance, but a whistle does not. A dog whistle for recall gives the same note every time, so your dog learns one sound means one thing. It also cuts through wind on open ground and in woodland, where a shout is soon lost. Gundog trainers have used whistles for generations for exactly this reason, and the same approach works for a family spaniel or a lurcher in the park.

What Do the ACME Numbers Mean?

ACME, based in Birmingham, numbers its whistles by pitch. The 210.5 and 211.5 are the two most common gundog pitches in the UK, and many trainers simply pick one and stick to it. What matters most is consistency. If you share a field with other handlers, choose a different number so your dog does not respond to someone else’s whistle. When you buy a spare, buy the same number, ideally the same model, because a small change in note can confuse a young dog.

Alpha or Classic?

The Alpha range has a reshaped body and mouthpiece that many people find easier to hold in the teeth while their hands are busy with a lead or a dummy. The Classic is slimmer and fits in a pocket. Both come in the same pitches.

Are Silent Dog Whistles Better?

Not for most owners. So called silent whistles are pitched mostly above human hearing, so you cannot easily tell if you blew a clean signal or how loud it was. Most trainers prefer an audible whistle for recall. Adjustable models such as the Siliget let you choose the note, but once you have found one that works, leave the screw alone so the sound stays the same.

How Do You Train Recall with Dog Whistles?

  1. Start indoors or in the garden with high value treats. Blow your recall signal, often a series of short pips, and reward your dog the moment they reach you.
  2. Repeat in short sessions over several days until your dog turns to the sound straight away.
  3. Move to a quiet open space on a long line, so your dog cannot practise ignoring the whistle.
  4. Add distractions slowly, and only drop the long line when recall is reliable.
  5. Keep one signal for one job. A long single blast for stop and pips for recall is a common pattern.

Never use the whistle to call your dog for something it dislikes, such as the end of a walk every time or a bath. The Dogs Trust has helpful recall advice, and a training treat bag keeps rewards to hand. For practice on a long line, clip it to a well fitted harness; our dog harness guide covers fitting.

Plastic or Metal?

Plastic whistles are light, warmer on the lips in winter and come in bright colours that are easy to find if you drop one. Metal whistles are tough and often cheaper, but they can be cold in frost. Whichever you choose, carry it on a lanyard round your neck so it is ready the moment you need it.

How Should You Carry and Look After a Whistle?

Wear it on a lanyard or a whistle band, not loose in a pocket, so it is ready before your dog is out of range. Rinse plastic whistles in warm soapy water now and then, as grit and dried saliva can change the note slightly. Check the mouthpiece for cracks after a winter of use. Keep a second whistle of the same model in the car or the dog bag, and label spares if more than one dog in the house is trained to a different pitch.

It also helps to agree the signals with everyone who walks your dog. Write them down: for example, three short pips for recall and one long blast for stop. Mixed signals from different family members are the most common reason whistle training stalls, far more often than the choice of whistle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Any Dog Learn Whistle Recall?

Yes. Puppies and older dogs can both learn it; older dogs may just need more repetition.

Will a Dog Whistle Hurt My Dog’s Ears?

No, not when used at a normal distance. Do not blow it right next to your dog’s head.

Should Everyone in the Family Use the Same Whistle?

Yes, use the same model and pitch so the sound is identical whoever is walking the dog.

Do I Still Need a Verbal Recall Cue?

It is worth keeping one for close work at home, but use the whistle as your main signal outdoors.

How Far Can a Dog Hear a Whistle?

Much further than a shout, but distance depends on wind, ground cover and the dog. Train at short range first.
