The Catit Cabrio Carrier Blue Grey is the overall pick for everyday vet runs: hard plastic, 51 x 33 x 35 cm, top, front and side access, and a seatbelt path. The Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier is the cabin-bag alternative, a charcoal soft case at 48.3 x 29.8 x 29.2 cm with a spring wire frame that can be pressed down under a seat.

These cat carriers were chosen from makers’ published specifications and live UK retail listings, checked October 2026. We have not flown or driven with them. Measurements, openings and load figures come from those listings, maker pages and UK welfare guidance.
How Large Should a Cat Carrier Be?
The box should let the cat lie down and turn around, yet stay snug enough that a sudden brake does not throw the body about.
Measure length from nose to tail base, height from floor to the tips of the ears when the cat sits, and add a few centimetres. Cats Protection wants a carrier large enough to change position but not so roomy that the cat slides. International Cat Care notes that a huge crate is not always kinder: many cats settle in a smaller, darker space.
The Trixie Capri 1 Transport Box is 32 x 31 x 48 cm and listed for animals up to 6 kg, so it fits a small adult or a kitten, not a long-bodied male. The Trixie Capri 3 Pet Carrier grows to 40 x 38 x 61 cm and 12 kg, with a stroking flap and a seatbelt clip. The Ferplast Atlas 10 Deluxe Cat Carrier is 51 x 34 x 30 cm (the listing also quotes 48 x 32.5 x 29 cm) and 5 kg, with a cotton cushion and a bowl. The Ferplast Atlas 20 Deluxe Open Cat Carrier is 57 x 33 x 37 cm and 8 kg, with a roof that lifts. The Catit Cabrio lists a 35 cm max cat length and 11.3 kg. The Petsfit Cat Carrier Large is 50 x 33 x 33 cm and up to 11.3 kg, as a soft bag rather than a hard box.
If you already own a dog crate for the car, International Cat Care still wants a small handheld carrier for the walk to the vehicle. A dog-specific crate belongs on the dog carriers page.
Is a Hard Box Safer Than a Soft Bag?
A sturdy plastic or wire model is the type UK charities prefer for most journeys, because it is strong, easy to scrub, and harder to escape.
Cats Protection tells owners to skip cardboard and most flimsy fabric, and to pick plastic or metal wire that is lightweight, secure and easy to clean. International Cat Care adds that fabric and wicker are difficult after a toileting accident, and that a removable top helps a vet examine the cat without dragging it out of a front hole. The Catit Cabrio has 360 degree openings and a single-hand lock. Both Capri boxes and both Atlas boxes clip apart so you can wash the corners. The Morpilot Cat Carrier is a 47 x 32 x 36 cm polyester bag for pets up to 9 kg, with mesh panels, a removable mat and a folding bowl: useful as a spare, weaker if it gets soaked.
Soft bags still appear in airline cabin rules because they can compress. The Sherpa Original Deluxe uses a patented spring wire frame, locking zips, top and side doors, a waterproof base and a washable liner. Confirm your airline’s under-seat centimetres before you rely on the word “approved” on any listing: each carrier must match that airline’s own page. Never write the cat loose in the car. Both charities say a loose cat can cause a crash or vanish through an open door.
Are Backpack Cat Carriers a Sound Choice?
Charities are cautious: most backpacks are too small to stand, lie and turn in, and the walking bounce can stress a cat that only needed a vet visit.
Cats Protection does not recommend backpack-style carriers for that reason. International Cat Care says backpacks can be unpleasant if the cat cannot hide, ventilation is poor, or the ride is bouncy. The Morpilot Expandable Cat Carrier Backpack uses a 4 mm hard frame, an expandable section, a safety leash and a double-sided mat, listed up to 9 kg. The PETKIT Breezy 2 Smart Cat Carrier is a 34 x 20 x 44 cm backpack about 1.6 kg empty, listed for pets under 7.7 kg, with app features and ventilation. The Petsfit Cat Backpack is 30 x 24 x 41 cm and listed up to 7 kg. If you still want hands-free carry for a short, necessary trip, pick the largest interior you can lift, clip the harness to the internal tether, and treat the backpack as a second choice beside a hard box, not as the only carrier in the house.
How Do You Get a Reluctant Cat Inside?
Leave the carrier out as furniture for weeks, feed treats in it, and only then close the door for a few seconds.
International Cat Care suggests familiar bedding, an open door, and a pheromone spray on the pad at least 15 to 20 minutes before travel so the alcohol note fades. Cats Protection has the same training ladder: blanket near the box, then inside, then treats, then a closed door, then a short lift. Keep one carrier per cat. Cover the box with a familiar towel in the car. Line it with an absorbent pad. Offer water up to departure; withhold food for about four to five hours unless a vet says otherwise. After a dirty journey, wash with mild soap, rinse, and dry outside so the box does not smell like the clinic.
A washable pad from your cat beds can go in the base if it still leaves room to turn. A clip-on travel dish is handy on long delays; everyday cat bowls stay at home so the carrier does not rattle. Secure the box on the back seat with a seatbelt, never in a hot boot, and do not leave the cat alone in a parked car.

How Should You Prepare the Carrier the Night Before?
Set the box up in a quiet room the evening before, so the morning is only a door click, not a hunt through a cupboard.
- Wipe the interior with unscented soap and dry it fully.
- Lay a washable pad or towel that already smells of the cat.
- If you use a pheromone spray, apply it 15 to 20 minutes before the cat goes in.
- Close cat flaps, windows and doors so a panicked dash cannot reach the street.
- Park the carrier on the back seat and test the seatbelt path before you fetch the cat.
- Pack a spare towel, waste bags and a small water bottle for delays.
- Keep one cat to one box, even if the pair normally sleep together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Small Cat Carriers Suit an Adult Moggie?
Only if the adult can turn around and lie flat. The Capri 1 is aimed at pets up to 6 kg. A long or heavy cat needs the Capri 3, Cabrio or Atlas 20, not a kitten-sized shell.
Can Two Cats Share One Box?
No. Cats Protection and International Cat Care both want separate carriers. Stress on a journey can break a household truce.
What Makes a Pet Cat Carrier Airline Ready?
The airline’s own cabin or hold rules, not a badge on the retail page. Soft bags are often used in cabins; hard plastic is usual in holds. Ask for the centimetre limit and the combined weight of cat plus box.
Should You Cover the Carrier in the Car?
A familiar towel over the top can cut visual stress, as long as ventilation slits stay open. Do not wrap a backpack so tightly that mesh cannot breathe.
How Do You Clean After Vomiting?
Mild soap, a scrubbing brush, a full rinse and outdoor drying. Strong disinfectant smells can make the next trip harder. Replace soaked fabric pads rather than perfume them.
