Best Reptile Heat Mats for Controlled Supplementary Warmth

These reptile heat mats were selected from the makers’ published wattage and size figures and live UK retail listings, checked October 2026. None of the pads were run in our own enclosures. Wattage, millimetre size, cable notes and any built-in controller come from those listings, then we checked them against UK welfare guidance on belly heat, night drops and thermostats.

How Large Should a Heat Mat Be?

Cover only part of the floor or one side wall, so the animal can leave the warm patch. A working rule is to heat about one third of the base of a glass tank, or a similar share of one wall in a wooden cabinet. Measure the inside floor first. A 15 x 28 cm, 7 W pad suits a small hatchling box or a nano tank. A 28 x 28 cm, 12 W pad suits a compact leopard gecko cabinet. A 43 x 28 cm, 20 W pad suits a mid-length wooden vivarium. A 28 x 80 cm, 45 W pad is for a long run, not a 30 cm cube. The listing for a reptile heat pad should state watts and millimetres; if it only says a wattage family, pick the size that matches your measured panel. A mat that fills the whole floor removes the cool end and can cook a burrowing animal.

Where Should You Mount a Heat Mat?

Place the pad where the animal cannot press its belly to an unguarded hot surface through deep substrate. The RSPCA’s leopard gecko advice puts a heat mat on one side of a wooden vivarium, or under half the base of a glass tank, always on an on/off thermostat with the probe over the mat. For a hatchling corn snake in a small box, the same charity accepts a mat under one side, again on a thermostat set near 30°C. On an open tortoise table the maker of the Habistat cloth mats shows a side-wall mount, never a buried pad under deep loam, because a tortoise digs down to cool off. Lift a glass tank on the supplied rubber feet or on slats so heat can escape under the tank. Wipe the panel first so the cloth sits flat. Do not fold or staple the element. Route the cable through a purpose-cut port, not through a slammed sliding door. Do Heat Mats Need a Thermostat?

Yes. A mat without a thermostat stays at full power whenever it is plugged in, and room temperature then decides how hot the surface becomes. Habistat states that its cloth mats should be used with a Mat Stat. Finest-Filters states that its 7 W and 45 W pads have no thermostat in the cable. Lucky Farm includes an inline dial, but that dial is not a probed thermostat and still needs a separate controller for a live animal. DERNORD ships a 16 W or 8 W pad with a three-button digital box; treat that box as the controller for that pad only, and still check the surface with a thermometer. Put the thermostat probe on the warm side, on or just above the mat, then confirm both ends each day with a thermometer. A thermostat guide covers on/off units for mats; do not use a dimming lamp stat on a cloth pad unless the maker says it is safe. Night-only use is common for leopard geckos when the room falls below 18°C. Corn snakes can drop to 16 to 20°C at night in a normal house; add non-light heat only if the room goes colder than that.

How Should You Fit a New Heat Mat?

1. Measure the inside floor or side wall and choose a pad that covers about one third of that panel, not the whole run.
2. Clean the glass or timber, then stick or tape the mat flat without folds, staples or kinks in the element.
3. Plug the mat into a probed thermostat, sit the probe on the warm side, and leave the cool end unheated.
4. Raise a glass tank on feet or slats if the pad sits under the base, so spare heat can leave underneath.
5. Run the set-up for a full day and record warm-end and cool-end temperatures before any animal goes in.
6. Check the cable port, lamp guards and water bowl so the animal cannot chew the flex or sit in a hot puddle.

Open tortoise tables need the pad on a side wall behind a guard if you use one at all. Heat mats are background tools, not a substitute for UVB or a basking lamp on a Mediterranean tortoise or a bearded dragon.
