The Jacobi Jayne Flo Classic Green Large is the overall pick because the 2.1 litre seed tube twists apart without tools, which matches weekly hygiene. The RSPB Classic Peanut Feeder is the mesh alternative when you want 330 g of peanuts or suet nibbles in rigid steel. Hopper and niger models below cover small-bird gardens; skip flat dishes if you cannot keep them sterile.

How we chose these wild bird feeders: capacities, ports, materials and cleaning notes come from the makers’ published specifications and live UK retail listings, checked October 2026. We have not tested the products ourselves. Hygiene, not novelty shape, decides whether a feeder helps or harms, so every model here is one you can empty, scrub and dry. Fat-ball cages, window suckers and weight-triggered squirrel baffles have their own pages; this guide stays on everyday hanging seed, nut, hopper and scraps designs.
Which Wild Bird Feeder Keeps Food Dry and Clean?
Damp seed is how trichomonosis and other infections linger. The RSPB feeder-hygiene advice wants food kept dry, eaten within one to two days for seed and peanuts, and held in a design you can take apart each week. Tube seed feeders such as the Jacobi Jayne Flo Classic Green Large (2.1 L, four ports, six hoop perches, ports unclip, base twists off) and the Peckish All Weather Metal Seed Feeder (700 g, four ports, quick-release base, polycarbonate tube) shed rain better than an open tray. A peanut feeder must be rigid steel mesh, which is the only safe way the RSPB accepts for whole peanuts; the RSPB Classic Peanut Feeder holds about 330 g and also takes suet nibbles. The Peckish All Weather 3 Seed Feeder splits 1 kg across three chambers and six ports if you want sunflower hearts in one tube and a mix in another. Niger needs its own tiny ports: the Jacobi Jayne Flo Niger Large (2.1 L, four ports) and the Jacobi Jayne Ring-Pull Click Small Niger keep goldfinches on a food other birds cannot empty. The Peckish Small Bird Hopper uses a click-top lid over a central well so rain hits the roof, not the seed, and its small entrances shut larger species out. Dedicated fat ball feeders are a separate product if you only want suet balls; the Chapelwood Suet Scraps Feeder here is a hanging steel cage with a rain cover for loose scraps, not a ball cage.
When Should You Put Seed and Peanuts Out?
The RSPB now asks you to offer peanuts and seeds only from the start of November to the end of April, when natural food is scarce and disease risk from crowded summer feeders is lower. From May to October, cut those foods right back and, if you feed at all, use small amounts of suet or mealworms that vanish the same day. The RSPCA garden-bird page repeats that seasonal cut because trichomonosis has hit greenfinches hard. Suet products may sit out up to seven days; seed and peanuts should go within one to two days; mealworms on the ground must be gone by dusk so hedgehogs do not eat leftovers. Pre-filled tubes such as the Jacobi Jayne Goldfinch Finder (ready-filled niger, snap-off base) and the Peckish Sunflower Hearts Feeder (400 g, refillable) still need that same empty-and-wash rhythm. Do not leave a full 2.1 L Flo sitting for a week in warm rain.
How Do You Site Feeders Away From Cats and Disease?
Hang tubes high, in the open, above a leap a cat can make from a wall or dustbin, and not under a roost tree where droppings fall into the ports. The RSPB wants you to move the feeding point after each weekly clean so waste does not pile in one patch. If you run more than one station, split seed and peanuts across the garden so finches and pigeons do not mob a single pole. A squirrel proof bird feeder is the right next page if grey squirrels empty every tube; the Flo Classic Green is not a chew-proof metal lifetime model. A window bird feeder is a different shape with a flat tray, which the RSPB no longer recommends because sick birds leave saliva on open surfaces. If you still use a dish-style pearl feeder, treat it as a high-risk surface and wash it more often than a tube, or retire it. A wildlife camera aimed at the pole helps you see whether food lasts two days or sits mouldering.

How Should You Clean a Garden Feeder?
The RSPB sets this out as an outdoor job with gloves, not a kitchen-sink rinse. Follow the order below each week, and stop feeding for at least three weeks if you see a sick bird.
- Empty leftover seed or peanuts into an outdoor bin; do not compost them or pour them back in.
- Take every port, lid, tray and tube apart so crumbs cannot hide in a thread.
- Scrub with hot soapy water and a bottle brush, then rinse.
- Disinfect with an animal-safe product or a mild 5 percent bleach solution, rinse again, and dry fully outdoors before you refill.
- Sweep the ground under the pole and hang the feeder in a new spot.
- Wash your hands and forearms. If disease signs persist, leave the station empty and report deaths to Garden Wildlife Health.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Have Tube Wild Bird Feeders Replaced Bird Tables?
Research cited by the RSPB found a higher disease risk on flat surfaces, where regurgitated food sits. A closed tube with drainable ports is easier to keep dry than a table or a window tray.
Can I Hang a Peanut Feeder All Year?
Not under current RSPB seasonal advice. Keep peanuts and seed for November to April, and only in a rigid steel mesh feeder, never in a net bag that can trap legs.
How Many Seed Feeder Ports Does a Small Garden Need?
Four ports on one tube is enough if you empty it in a day or two. Add a second station, rather than a taller tube, if several species queue and fight.
Do Niger Feeders Work Next to Sunflower Hearts?
Goldfinches often ignore niger if easier hearts sit a metre away. Space the niger tube, or pause the hearts for a week, if you want them to find the tiny seed.
Should I Put a Tray Under a Hanging Tube?
A tray catches spill but becomes a flat surface. If you fit one, wash it with the tube and do not let wet seed cake on it.
