Tortoise Houses for UK Gardens

The PawHut Tortoise House 3-Room 112 x 65 cm is the overall pick among ready-made garden boxes because it has the largest run floor on this page at 0.65 m². For a simple hut, the Trixie Natural Living Shelter is the alternative if you already have a proper outdoor tortoise run and only need a raised wooden hide.

These tortoise houses were chosen from the makers’ published specifications and live UK retail listings, checked October 2026. We have not assembled or weathered them. Sizes, materials and tray measurements come from those listings. Welfare figures come from the RSPCA care sheet that we opened.

How Large Should an Outdoor Tortoise House Be?

A tortoise house on a British patio is only one piece of housing. The RSPCA sheet for Hermann’s, spur-thighed, marginated and Horsfield’s tortoises asks for an outdoor enclosure of about 10 m² for one animal, with a barrier at least 45 cm high and buried 15 cm so the tortoise cannot climb or dig out. Brick or stone is preferred. The same sheet wants a waterproof refuge in a sunny spot, raised off wet ground, with a fixed ramp, plus shrubs for shade and mesh overhead against foxes and gulls.

None of the ready-made boxes below reach 10 m². The PawHut Tortoise House 3-Room 112 x 65 cm gives a 0.65 m² run plus a 0.12 m² sleeping bay and a 0.11 m² balcony. Next, the PawHut Tortoise House 2 Layers opens a 0.46 m² run box on a 102 x 56 cm footprint. Those figures are useful for a hatchling’s supervised daytime tortoise run on a balcony, not for an adult living outdoors unsupervised. Treat every product here as a hide-plus-pen that sits inside a larger fenced garden, or as a short outdoor session box, and keep a full indoor table for cold months on the tortoise table guide.

What Makes a Garden Hide Safer Than a Flat Box?

RSPCA advice is for the refuge to be raised so newspaper or dry leaves stay dry, and a ramp that is wide and fixed. The Exo Terra Tortoise Cave is a 28 x 19 x 39 cm resin hide with a wide pebble mouth; it will not rot, but it sits on the soil unless you lift it onto a dry plinth. For a simple hut, the Trixie Natural Living Shelter is a 30 x 22 x 25 cm wooden hut aimed at guinea pigs, which works as a small dry cave if you raise it and add a ramp. Neither replaces a fenced 10 m² run.

Ready-made wooden houses add a mesh roof, a plastic tray and often a lamp arm. Mesh lets sun and UVB through and stops a herring gull dropping in. A tray stops wet substrate leaking onto a deck, but it also stops the tortoise digging the 50 mm of loam and play sand the RSPCA wants indoors, so scrape the tray and offer a soil patch in the wider garden. Water-resistant paint helps fir last a season; it is not a substitute for moving the box off sodden lawn in a wet week. For a floor covering inside the hide, see the reptile substrate guide and skip gravel, wood shavings and calci-sand.

Do These Boxes Replace Indoor Heat and UVB?

They do not. Mediterranean species still need a 20°C to 25°C daytime indoor space, a 35°C basking lamp and UVB closer than 30 cm when they cannot live on natural sun. A lamp holder on a garden box is only a helper on a cool May afternoon. Pair any holder with a thermostat and a guarded bulb from the UVB light guide, and bring the tortoise in before dusk. A shallow water bowl, changed daily, belongs in both the garden and the indoor table; the water bowl page covers dishes that will not tip on a tray.

The Trixie Natura Outdoor Enclosure 6 Elements is a 58 x 38 cm mesh pen with a net roof. It is sold for young small animals, so it can hold a hatchling for a short, watched sun session, then fold away. It has no hide of its own, which is why it sits as a reserve next to a wooden hut.

How Should You Place a New Tortoise House in the Garden?

  1. Choose a well-drained, sunny patch with no slug pellets or weedkiller, and leave dandelion and plantain standing as food.
  2. Set a barrier at least 45 cm high and buried 15 cm around a run that is as close to 10 m² as you can spare, then sit the wooden house or cave inside that fence, not instead of it.
  3. Raise the hide on bricks or a dry plinth, fix a wide ramp, and line the sleeping bay with dry leaves or shredded paper that you can replace when it wets.
  4. Add a shallow water dish, a pile of scramble rocks, and shade from a shrub or an open lid on the hottest wall.
  5. If the box has a lamp arm, fit a guarded bulb on a thermostat only for cool bright days, and bring the tortoise indoors before the temperature falls toward 15°C.
  6. Close mesh lids against cats and gulls, and never leave a hatchling out overnight in a tray box that a fox can drag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Hatchling Live in One of These Boxes All Year?

No. A tray house on a deck gets too cold at night and too wet in a British winter. Keep a heated indoor table of at least 180 x 120 cm for one tortoise, as the RSPCA lists, and use the garden box only in mild, dry weather.

Is a Mesh Roof Enough Against Foxes?

Mesh stops birds and curious cats if the latches work. A determined fox can still shift a light fir box. Sit the house inside a buried fence and bring small tortoises in at dusk.

Should You Put Soil in the Plastic Tray?

A thin layer of loam and play sand is fine if you can lift the tray to dump it. Do not use cat litter, gravel or calci-sand. Give a deeper digging patch in the wider run so the tortoise can bury itself as the RSPCA describes.

Do You Need a Lamp Holder If the Garden Faces South?

Natural sun on a clear day supplies UVB that glass would block. On a cool, bright April afternoon a guarded lamp on a holder can lift the shell temperature toward 35°C. Switch it off and take the tortoise in when the air drops.

Can Two Tortoises Share One Garden House?

These species are territorial. Males bite legs and smaller animals miss meals. Unless the whole enclosure is very large, house them alone and give each one its own hide.
