Stable Mats and Horse Stall Mats for UK Yards

The Horse Stable Floor Mats Bubbletop 12 mm suit a typical UK loose box that needs a heavy rubber sheet with drainage grooves under bedding. If you must lift mats each month as the BHS asks, the Ark Mat EVA Stable Floor Mats at 24 mm weigh 8 kg, so one person can turn them without a two-person rubber slab.

How we chose these stable mats: each sheet, tile, roll and wall panel was checked against the maker’s published specifications and live UK retail listings in October 2026. We did not fit any boxes ourselves. The ten mains mix heavy rubber stall sheets, lighter EVA tiles, a wall liner, a hollow gateway mat, cushioned EVA packs for a whole box, wall liners, and thin rolls for a horsebox or tack room.

How Do You Measure a Loose Box for Stable Mats?

Measure the internal floor from wall to wall in both directions, then divide by the sheet size so you know how many pieces you need and where you will cut. A standard 1.82 x 1.22 m sheet such as the Horse Stable Floor Mats Bubbletop 12 mm, the Ark Mat EVA Stable Floor Mats or the Ark Mat Ameobic Rubber Stable Floor Mats covers a large part of a 3.6 x 3.6 m loose box. Two or three sheets usually finish a typical UK stall once you trim the last edge to sit tight against the wall. The British Horse Society says rubber flooring should cover the floor with no gaps, because a hoof that drops between sheets can twist. Horse stall mats that leave a strip of bare concrete at the door will pond urine there.

The ASC Horse Stable Floor Mats 6 Pack uses smaller interlocking tiles, about 61 x 61 cm, so you can pad a narrow trailer or a cut-out around a drain. Add packs until the floor is covered. Leave a small expansion gap only if an EVA maker asks for one. Rubber sheets should butt tight so no hoof finds a slot.

Which Stable Mat Material Suits a UK Yard?

Solid rubber with a grip face and grooved back is the usual choice for a daily-use box. The bubbletop 12 mm sheet and the amoebic 12 mm sheet both claim a urine-proof face and drainage channels underneath. They stay put because they are heavy. Closed-cell EVA such as the 24 mm Ark Mat sheet and the ASC pack is much lighter, so it suits a yard that will lift horse stall mats every month to wash the floor, which the BHS asks you to do at least once a month and more often in hot weather. EVA also insulates a cold concrete pad. It is not as hard-wearing as a 12 mm rubber slab if a shod horse paws all winter.

Walls need a different product. The Stables Wall Mats Soft Black EVA panel is 10 mm x 1.8 x 1.2 m and 3.25 kg. Fixings are sold separately. Use it where a horse might bang a hip, not as the floor. A gateway or wash area is another job: the EVERMAT Horse Stable Gateway Rubber Hollow Safety Mat is 22 mm of 100 percent rubber with 2 cm drain holes and flat edges so you can lay several side by side. The maker warns it can be slippery when wet, so treat it as a mud board, not a wet-room floor. Packs of EVA mats, such as the ARKMat pair at 24 mm or the four 18 mm mats, cover a whole box and stay light enough to lift. Thin 3 mm rolls such as the Ark Mat Smooth Rubber Roll Flooring line a horsebox or van floor. They are not a substitute for a 12 mm stall sheet.

The BHS does not endorse leaving a horse on bare matting. Put a proper bed on top so urine soaks and the horse will lie down. World Horse Welfare says a stabled horse needs bedding that lets it lie and sleep, plus forage, friends and freedom. Pair the floor with a deep enough bed and a filled hay net rather than hoping the rubber alone is comfort.

How Should You Fit and Clean Horse Stall Mats?

Sweep the concrete, check it is level, and dry it. Lay the first sheet in a back corner and work toward the door so you are not walking on a lifted edge. Butt rubber sheets. Interlock the ASC tiles and fit the twelve edging strips against a straight wall. Cut EVA with a sharp knife on a spare board. Rubber may need a utility knife and a straight edge. Wash a new bubbletop sheet: the listing says a greasy transit film can sit on the face until you hose it or cover it with bedding for a day or two.

Muck out daily. Lift the mats at least monthly, scrub the underside and the concrete, and let both dry before you relay them. Ammonia under a sealed sheet is a respiratory risk. Wipe wall panels. Hose a hollow gateway mat so mud falls through the 2 cm holes. The EVERMAT page says to use it in dry conditions if the surface is slippery. A stable rug that sits on a wet, unbedded mat will stay filthy, which is one reason the BHS wants bedding on top. Keep horse feeders off a soiled corner so forage is not eaten from a urine patch. Pick out hooves twice a day if you can, and use hoof boots on the road rather than expecting a stall sheet to harden a sole.

How Should You Lay New Stable Mats for Horses?

  1. Measure the box twice and sketch how many 1.82 x 1.22 m sheets or 61 cm tiles you need, including cuts at the door.
  2. Sweep and dry the floor. Fill holes so a sheet cannot sag.
  3. Lay from the back wall, butting rubber or clicking EVA, and keep a hoof-wide gap from appearing at any joint.
  4. Put a full bed of shavings, straw or pellets on top, deep enough that the horse can lie and stale on bedding, as the BHS bedding types page and World Horse Welfare both ask.
  5. Hang a hay net or offer floor forage so the horse is not eating off a wet join.
  6. After the first week, check every edge for creep and press sheets back before urine finds a channel.
  7. Once a month, lift, scrub, dry and relay. Do it more often in summer heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Leave a Horse on Bare Rubber?

The BHS says no. Bedding on top soaks urine, contains droppings and gives the horse a surface it will stale and lie on. Bare mats leave wet floors and dirty rugs.

How Many Sheets Does One Loose Box Need?

Two 1.82 x 1.22 m sheets cover a 3.64 x 1.22 m strip. A square 3.6 m box usually needs three sheets plus a cut, or two sheets turned to suit the door wall. Always measure the actual box, because door rebates steal centimetres.

Are EVA Tiles Strong Enough for a Shod Horse?

The ASC pack and the 24 mm Ark Mat sheet are sold for stall and horsebox floors and have a denser face than play-mat foam. A horse that paws hard may still chew an edge. Check joins weekly and replace a cracked tile.

What Goes in a Horsebox Rather Than a Loose Box?

A 3 mm roll such as the Ark Mat Smooth Rubber Roll Flooring or the Shield Autocare checker roll lines a floor you want to lift and hose. For a box that travels often, the ASC interlocking pack or a single 12 mm rubber sheet is thicker under a hoof.

Are EVA Wall Mats Worth Fitting?

They help if your horse kicks or rolls against block or timber walls. A 10 mm wall panel softens that contact, but it never replaces a floor mat or a proper bed.
