A dog boot liner covers the floor, sides and bumper of your car boot so mud, wet fur and claws stay off the carpet and trim. The WeFine Car Boot Liner for Dogs with Bumper Flap is a good all rounder, while the KYG and pecute liners add thicker padding.

How we chose: every liner here is sold for dogs travelling in a car boot and showed as in stock on its UK product page on 8 October 2026. Measurements and materials come from the listings. We have not fitted each one, so check the measurements against your own boot.
Why Use a Car Boot Liner for Dogs?
A wet, muddy dog can ruin a boot carpet in one trip, and claws scratch plastic trim and the bumper as they jump in and out. A liner gives a waterproof layer you can lift out, shake and wash, and it helps the car keep its value. Most liners are quilted polyester with a waterproof backing and a non slip base so they stay put on corners. Better ones add side panels that clip to the boot walls and a flap that drops over the bumper.
A liner protects the car, not the dog. It does not hold your dog in place, so you still need a dog guard, a crate or a crash tested harness. The Highway Code says dogs must be suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or be hurt if you stop quickly.

How Do You Measure Your Boot?
Measure three things with the rear seats up: the floor depth from the boot lip to the back of the seats, the width between the wheel arches, and the height of the side walls. Compare these with the liner’s measurements. A liner that is a little too big can be tucked in, but one that is too small leaves the carpet exposed at the edges, which is where mud collects. If you fold the rear seats flat for a large dog, measure the full floor length instead and choose a long liner.
Universal or Car Specific?
Universal liners fit most cars with some tucking and strapping. Liners made for one model fit more neatly but cost more and will not move with you to your next car. For most owners a universal liner with adjustable straps is the practical choice.
Side Panels and Bumper Flaps
Side panels matter if your dog leans against the boot walls or shakes off water, which sprays the trim. Look for panels that fix with hook and loop pads or straps, rather than ones that simply rest against the side. A bumper flap folds out over the rear bumper while the dog jumps in and out, then tucks back inside before you close the boot. It saves a lot of scratches on the paint.
Is Padding Worth Having?
Thicker, quilted liners give a softer floor, which helps older dogs, dogs with stiff joints and anyone on long journeys. They also deaden the noise of claws on a hard boot floor. For a dog that suffers from joint pain, pair the liner with a dog ramp so they do not have to jump in. Thin, wipe clean liners suit dogs that dig or chew at fabric, as there is less to grip.
Keeping the Liner Clean
Shake out loose mud and hair after each trip, ideally once the mud has dried. Most fabric liners can be hand washed or put through a cool machine wash if they fit the drum, but check the care label first, as hot water can damage the waterproof backing. Dry the liner flat or over a line, never in a tumble dryer. A rubber pet hair brush or one of our pet hair removers lifts fur that has worked into the quilting.
Liner, Seat Cover or Crate?
If your dog rides on the back seat, a seat cover or hammock does the same job there, and our guide to pet car seat covers compares them. For dogs that travel in the boot, a liner under a dog crate protects the carpet and the crate keeps your dog secure. Many owners use both, with the liner catching water and hair that falls through the crate tray.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Liner Stop My Dog Sliding?
A non slip backing stops the liner moving, and the quilted top gives some grip, but it will not hold your dog in place on its own.
Can I Leave the Liner in All the Time?
Yes. Most owners leave it in and fold the bumper flap inside when they are not carrying the dog.
Do Boot Liners Fit Cars with Split Rear Seats?
Some liners have a split back panel so you can fold one rear seat while the liner stays in place. Check the listing if you need this.
Are Boot Liners Waterproof?
Most have a waterproof backing, but seams can let water through over time. Dry off a soaking wet dog with a towel first.
