The Susany Outdoor Walk-in Aviary is the overall pick if you can give a garden flock a 178 by 122 cm aluminium flight they can actually use. The vidaXL Outdoor Bird Aviary is the wider steel alternative for owners who want a still larger walk-in. Compact wooden and wheeled indoor aviaries below suit finches or a pair that still get daily free flight indoors.

How we chose these bird aviaries: sizes, mesh, roofs, doors and trays come from the makers’ published specifications and live UK retail listings, checked October 2026. We have not tested the products ourselves. A large outdoor enclosure remains the housing the RSPCA treats as the proper long-term home, so indoor models are listed only as flight rooms or sheltered stands, not as a reason to skip outdoor time.
How Large Should a Bird Aviary Be?
The RSPCA housing advice says the height, width and depth of an aviary must be at least four times the flying wingspan of the largest bird, then add another 20 percent for each extra bird. Measure the bird with both wings fully open, not the body length on a perch, because a cockatiel that looks compact on a dowel still needs a long, uncluttered flight line. Walk-in garden models such as the Susany Outdoor Walk-in Aviary (178 x 122 x 194 cm, 2.3 m² floor) and the vidaXL Outdoor Bird Aviary (213.5 x 217.5 x 211.5 cm) are the only units here that give a person room to enter and rearrange perches. A parrot aviary for a medium parrot still has to clear that four-times rule; a 136 cm indoor tower does not become large aviaries just because the listing uses the word. Indoor aviaries on this page work as a sheltered flight or overnight room, and they still need a safe indoor fly-out of at least six hours a day if the bird lives mainly in a smaller bird cage.
Colony species such as budgerigars, lovebirds and cockatiels may share one flight if every bird can pass the others without colliding. The RSPCA is clear that you should not house more than one pair of large non-colony parrots, such as African greys or macaws, in a home aviary, because a typical garden build is not big enough for two pairs to retreat. If you keep budgies as a group, the dedicated budgie cages page covers bar spacing and indoor cages; use this page for the outdoor or walk-in flight those birds should have as well.
Which Materials Keep an Outdoor Aviary Safe?
Mesh and timber have to keep pet birds in and wild birds, cats and damp out. Aluminium walk-ins such as the Susany unit use an aluminium frame and aluminium wire mesh with a 61.5 x 160 cm hinged door, so the metal itself does not rust, but the 2.5 x 5 cm grid on the maker page is too open for a budgie or canary and suits only larger species that cannot slip through. The vidaXL Outdoor Bird Aviary uses galvanised steel with a 12.7 x 12.7 mm mesh and a 48 x 152.5 cm lockable gate, which is a tighter grid for small birds yet still a walk-in you can enter. Wooden garden units from PawHut and Ferplast mix fir or FSC Nordic pine with powder-coated metal grids and an asphalt or painted roof so rain sheds off the perch line. The Ferplast WILMA LARGE Aviary adds a water-repellent, UV-resistant, non-toxic paint on FSC pine, a painted metal mesh, a safety-hook front door, two side flaps and a removable plastic drawer. Bar spacing on the metal indoor flights sits around 9.8 to 11 mm on the Ferplast PLANETA LARGE Aviary and Ferplast NOTA MEDIUM Outdoor Aviary, which is the range makers quote for canaries, budgies and finches. Confirm the gap against the smallest head in the flock before you buy: a 15 mm gap that suits a cockatiel can trap a zebra finch.
The RSPCA also wants a safety porch or double doors on a true outdoor flight so one open panel does not empty the flock into the garden. None of the compact wooden towers here include a porch, so you will need a second door, a netted lobby, or a trained step-up into a bird carrier before you open the main hatch. Shade at least a third of the outdoor area, and give tropical species a draught-proof indoor room held between 12 and 26°C in hard weather. Keep the mesh tight against wild birds so avian flu and psittacosis are less likely to pass through shared perches or droppings.
How Do You Clean and Site a New Aviary?
Site the flight on level, well-drained ground, out of prevailing wind and away from the kitchen extract, barbecue smoke and the neighbour’s cat run. A walk-in should sit where you can fit a second door or a netted porch without blocking the hinged gate. Wooden units with asphalt roofs need a slight fall so water does not pool on the tray; the PawHut Wooden Bird Aviary Outdoor lifts the floor about 11 cm off the ground on the maker notes, which helps the tray stay dry. Indoor wheeled flights such as the Yaheetech Bird Aviary 136 cm and the Ferplast PLANETA LARGE Aviary belong against a solid wall, not in a draught or beside a radiator, with the top partly covered so birds do not feel exposed from above.
Cleaning is a tray-and-grid job on every model that publishes a removable drawer. Slide the tray daily, scrub the grid weekly, and wash feeders outside the flight so damp seed does not sit under perches. Ferplast Brava rotating feeders on PLANETA, NOTA and WILMA fill from outside and close so a bird cannot bolt while you pour seed. Powder-coated steel wipes with warm soapy water; untreated timber should only take a bird-safe, non-toxic wipe, never creosote or solvent stains. Change natural perches when they glaze smooth, and keep swings and parrot foraging toys off the flight line so a bird can still flap hard without hitting a bell.

How Should You Introduce a Bird to an Aviary?
The RSPCA flying advice asks for a large aviary with a porch and double doors, or a safe indoor flight of at least six hours a day. Wait for a warm, still day and keep the first sessions under ten minutes if the bird has lived indoors. Use this sequence.
- Fit perches of mixed thickness, food, water and shade before the bird arrives, and leave a clear flight lane down the longest wall.
- Carry the bird in a closed carrier, step inside, shut the hatch, then ask for a step-up onto your hand.
- Show the bowls and a low perch; if the bird will not step down, walk the flight quietly and try again another day.
- Watch high roosts and food bowls for bullying, and add extra bowls if one bird guards a corner.
- Extend the visit only when the bird preens or feeds; put a non-flyer in a flight of other non-flyers, never with strong fliers.
- Fit a porch or a second person on the door before you leave a walk-in, and microchip or ring the bird in case of a slip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Tall Indoor Flight Replace a Garden Aviary?
No. The RSPCA still wants outdoor time with sun, light wind and rain, plus a heated indoor room in hard weather. A wheeled indoor flight is a sheltered room, not a substitute for that outdoor space.
Do I Need UV Lamps If the Aviary Sits Outside?
Birds that spend real time in unfiltered daylight can use the sun. Indoor-only birds need flicker-free UVA and UVB lamps made for birds, with shade and a choice of perch distances, because glass blocks those rays.
What Bar Spacing Suits a Mixed Finch and Budgie Flight?
Stay at or under about 10 to 12 mm for those small heads. The 12.7 mm vidaXL mesh is the tightest walk-in grid here; the Susany aluminium grid is too open for a finch.
Should I Put a Nest Box in a Shared Aviary?
The RSPCA warns that dark, enclosed corners can trigger nesting and aggression. Leave nest boxes out unless you are deliberately breeding, and give every bird a high roost it can claim without a cavity.
How Do I Move a Bird from a Cage into a Walk-In?
Train a step-up, practise short carrier trips, then follow the warm-day introduction above. Never tip a bird out of a carrier and walk away on the first visit.
