Best Aquarium Cleaning Kits for Routine Maintenance

The JBL Proclean Aqua In Out Complete is the overall pick if you want a tap-connected kit that vacuums the substrate and refills the tank without carrying buckets. If you mainly need glass, corner and plant work, the Boxtech Aquarium Cleaning Tools 6-in-1 Cleaner Set covers those jobs with one extendable handle.

These aquarium cleaning kits were chosen from the makers’ published specifications and live UK retail listings, checked October 2026. They were not tested by us. Head counts, hose lengths and tank-height figures below come only from those listings or the manufacturer pages listed as sources.

What Should an Aquarium Cleaning Kit Actually Include?

An aquarium cleaning kit, and any fish tank cleaning kit built the same way, is a matched set of aquarium cleaning tools for the jobs you repeat every week: lifting mulm from the substrate, wiping algae on the panes, and moving a portion of the water out and back. Handle sets swap a sponge, scraper, rake, net and tube brush on one pole. Siphon sets add a hose, a gravel tube and a starter bulb or tap pump. Electric kits add a small pump so you are not waiting on gravity.

Buy a kit that matches the jobs your tank actually creates. A planted nano needs a short pole and a soft sponge more than a 8 m hose. A 120 cm community tank needs reach, a flow valve and a tube that fits between stems. A dedicated algae blade on its own belongs on our algae scrapers page; a stand-alone siphon with no extra heads belongs on our gravel vacuums page. This page is for combined kits.

OATA lists a gravel cleaner or siphon on the shopping list for a freshwater set-up and warns you never to start a siphon by mouth, because tank water can carry bacteria. OATA freshwater maintenance notes also tell you to wash your hands, rinse off soap, and cover cuts before they go in the water.

How Much Water Should You Change Each Week?

The RSPCA asks for a weekly change of about 30 percent, left in the tank with the fish, using a siphon so you lift waste from the gravel at the same time. RSPCA tank-care advice says to swish filter sponges in the water you have just removed, never under the tap, because chlorine kills the bacteria that process ammonia. OATA writes up to 25 percent each week and adds that new tap water must be dechlorinated and brought to the same temperature as the tank.

Those two figures are close enough that you can pick the volume your stocking and test results support. Heavy feeding, goldfish and a small tank push you toward the larger change. A lightly stocked planted tank may sit nearer 20 percent if nitrate stays low. Clear water is not proof of safety: test ammonia and nitrite at least fortnightly, as the RSPCA says both should read 0 mg/L. If you need bottles and colour charts, use our water test kits guide rather than guessing from the look of the glass.

Match refill temperature to the tank. A bucket that sat in a cold kitchen can drop a 60 litre aquarium by several degrees in one pour. Warm the new water, or run a spare heater in the bucket, then add a conditioner. Unplug the tank heater and wait for the glass to cool before the water line falls below the minimum mark.

Which Heads Are Safe on Glass and Acrylic?

Soft sponges and plastic blades are the default on acrylic, because a steel scraper will haze the pane. Glass tanks tolerate a metal blade for the hard green spots, but only if no sand grain is trapped under the edge. Magnetic pads stay outside the water, which helps if you dislike wet sleeves, yet they can trap grit and scratch if you slide them over leftover substrate.

How Should You Run a Weekly Aquarium Clean?

  1. Test the water first so you know whether this is a normal 25 to 30 percent change or a larger rescue change.
  2. Unplug heaters and wait for glass tubes to cool; move ornaments only if they block the siphon path.
  3. Start the siphon with the kit’s bulb, tap pump or electric motor, never by mouth, and work the tube through the gravel in short plunges.
  4. Wipe the front and side glass with the sponge or pad, then use a scraper only on stubborn spots and only on the material the head is made for.
  5. Rinse filter sponges in the bucket of old tank water, not in tap water, and put them back before the bacteria dry out.
  6. Refill with dechlorinated water that matches the tank temperature, then restore the heater and check the thermometer.

Do the glass last if you have just stirred the substrate, or the pane will film over again as particles settle. Net out uneaten food before it reaches the gravel. If the heater has been running dry or the temperature has drifted, pause the clean and read our aquarium heaters guide before you add more water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Clean the Whole Substrate in One Session?

Leave patches of mature gravel untouched so some waste-processing bacteria stay in place. Work a third to a half of the bed each week, and skip dense plant crowns unless mulm is actually smothering the stems.

Is an Electric Cleaning Kit Kinder Than a Siphon?

An electric pump can move water faster, which is useful on a deep tank, but the switch on many kits is not waterproof and the flow can pull small shrimp. A hand siphon with a mesh guard is gentler if you keep fry or invertebrates.

How Do You Stop a Scraper Scratching the Glass?

Rinse the blade, check for trapped sand, and use light strokes. On acrylic, put the steel head away and stay with the sponge or a plastic card sold for that surface.

Do You Need a Full Kit If You Already Own a Gravel Vacuum?

Not if that vacuum already has a starter, a valve and a long enough hose. Add a separate sponge and a net rather than buying a second siphon. A handle kit still helps for corners and filter hoses.

When Should You Clean Filter Media During a Water Change?

When flow has dropped or the sponge is clogged, and only in the old tank water. The RSPCA also tells you to clean the impeller so the filter keeps moving water past the biological media.
